As a Bermudian, I can tell you our people had no idea. Is it possible that charitable foundations and large insurers are making these donations and not our country? Some clarity would be welcome.

Sure, and this is all spelled out in the article. The money was likely related to a patent lawsuit from a chip manufacturer on the island. The data only shows which country it's coming from, not the individual donor, so it has to be inferred:

"The small island country has sent almost $1 billion to academia over the past five years, three-quarters of which, $750 million, was going to Carnegie Mellon. That is also the same amount the Bermuda-based chip manufacturer Marvell Technology Group settled with the university for in 2016 over patent infringement on chip technology that was developed at the school."

OK but the article implies it is from the country not a company in the country. There are many companies here. The other countries listed seem to be governmental grants.

There are other monies floating around and our government hasn’t been honest about a lot of things so it’s worth finding out specifics
